A Tribute to President Musharraf

Aitezaz Ahsan Rebuffed By Asif Zardari?

By BAHADUR

You know why Mr. Aitezaz Ahsan has been talking tough in Quetta this past week? He wanted the PPP to let him slip into the Parliament through a by-election. The party appears to be not interested in giving him a ticket. And you can’t blame the party. After all, Mr. Ahsan was acting last year as if he didn’t need the party and that the party needed him. So to pressure the party leadership and embarrass his own party’s government in Islamabad, Mr. Ahsan decided to increase the pressure on the party. He traveled to Quetta with the politicized former chief justice and gave statements virtually threatening the PPP that he will create a mess on the streets if the politicized chief justice was not restored. In this context, we have received this report. We have not verified its content. But it appears to be in sync with the developments.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan—After a strong rebuff and threat from Mr. Asif Ali Zardari in Nou Dero, Larkana, on Thursday night (April 4), Mr. Aitzaz Ahsan was quite perturbed.

He immediately contacted human rights activist Asma Jehangir and narrated the whole episode to her. She has been asked to contact their ‘friends’ in a diplomatic mission in London, a foreign embassy in Washington D.C., to convey the new hurdle facing the Aitezaz-led ‘lawyers movement’.

According to a witness, Aitzaz Ahsan was called by PPP Co-Chairman Mr. Asif Ali Zardari after PPP’s Central Executive Committee meeting. Aitezaz was told in the presence of a big gathering to “remain in his shoes.”

He was told not be “over smart” and immediately call off the lawyers’ movement. If he does not abide by the party decision, he can continue what he is doing and the PPP and PML-N led government will not even consider restoration of the judges because the government cannot do this under blackmail.

Mr. Aitzaz Ahsan was shocked because he never expected such humiliation in the presence of all the party leaders. He had no answer. Later, he contacted Asma Jehangir who is working as a link between certain foreign and shadowy elements and the Aitezaz Ahsan-led lawyers movement and some elements in the Pakistani civil society.

She told Ahsan that the lawyers movement can not be discontinued at this moment as she has already spoken to supporters outside the country and has commitment in terms of moral and financial support. The Indian Legal Forums in several western countries, which are suspected to be fronts of the Indian intelligence, have prepared plans to provide media coverage to any agitation that Mr. Ahsan plans in Pakistan this summer to embarrass the new government in Islamabad.

Ms. Jahangir also informed Mr. Ahsan that he would be informed about the new strategy through a known book seller in Islamabad who is actively engaged in an anti-Army campaign and is responsible for publication of anti-state material and strategy papers.
